"The problem was communicated to Borland just before the holidays by the InterBase open source community," said Dale L. Fuller, president and CEO of Borland. "This is one of the reasons we are such a strong proponent of open sourcing, as it helps expose and remedy problems on a much greater scale than proprietary software development. As of January 10, 2001, a certified patch has been made available for use from Borland's web site and is available to all users of InterBase software."

This potential security issue could enable illegal access to the database metadata (metadata describes the contents of a database for access purposes), however, would not necessarily result in database content being viewed and altered illegally. Malicious tampering with the metadata can render the database inoperable, but would not expose secured information records.
